The Johor Zoo was first established in 1928 is reputed to be the first zoo in Asia. Originally the private collection of the King of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar, it was handed over to the state in the 1960 and first opened to the public in 1962. You meet typical and local zooanimals, like tigers, elephants and chimpanzees and has a terrariumbuilding. It covers an area of 5 ha.

Closed for renovation - it should move to Iskandar Puteri (opening in 2025). But apparently now both JB and Iskandar Puteri will have a zoo
 

The zoo has a playground


History:

Johor Zoo is located at Jalan Gertak Merah and is reputed to be the first zoo in Asia. It was established in the year 1928 by the late Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar and was opened to the public in the year 1962.  In 2016, the state government approved the relocation of the zoo from Johor Bahru to 20.23 hectares (50.0 acres) of land in Iskandar Puteri with a budget of MYR53 million. The Zoo closed october 2020. In 2022 the Johor government told that Johor Zoo will stay at present place and open after a renovation.

After entering the zoo on the left side is the pelican lake, while on the right side are bird aviaries. At the end of those we have some stairs across going up to some hornbilled birds, binturong, chital and monkeys. going back the same stairs and turn left we see some monkeys like celebes crested macaques. Follow the route you see cassowarys at the left and hippos to the right. Keeping left we have a big green area for for barasinga and ostriches. Here a seperated enclosure is for the gaur. Following the path straight forward you soon see some bird aviaries for flamingos and behind the gibbons. Climbing up the stairs you are at at pelican lake again. Follow the road upp hill and you meet snakes, birds and at one point arabian camels. Opposite are the Malayan tapirs, follow theire enclosure downhill and to the right. In front of you, you know have sevaral diferent big pitts. Here you find sun bears, tigers, lions and chimpanzees. At the rear end of the pitts and the pelican lake you find Asian elephants.
